Winter ‘22-’23 ends
This winter season went by FAST! I’m not sure about you but somehow I cannot believe it is closing weekend for Vail. Beaver Creek and Keystone closed last weekend. Copper and Breckenridge will be open a little bit longer. As usual, it never is long enough. This winter saw some normalization, post-covid. Even though the virus is far from “gone”, people were much more willing to get back to indoor on mountain eating without reservations, festivals, and travel in general. After two years of pandemic land, this return to normal was a bit surreal at times!
One of my favorite days this year was a solo, bluebird day making laps in Game Creek Bowl. It was one of those days that life was getting too crazy so I forced myself into a self care day and went out. Everything was going right. The snow was great and the vibe sublime.
We also enjoyed visits from family and friends. We taught a friend how to snowboard and showed our family how much fun tubing is! Another one of my favorite days in Vail this year was sushi date night at Matsuhisa. We haven’t celebrated our anniversary in years (we stupidly got married during busy season so it always seems to get pushed to the wayside) so we decided to go all out and enjoy the Omakase menu. Course after course, our minds were blown. I nearly teared up with the waygu steak course and all of the sushi creations were innovative, fresh, and supremely satisfying. I cannot wait to make it a special tradition.
The season ends with snowfall totals sitting just about at normal for the 30 year average. At the writing of this it was 101% of normal with 352” inches of snowfall. After the lifts stop spinning we’re sure to get another foot or so out of that given that there’s still a good bit of spring storms in the forecast. The more snow the better! Snowy winters make for awesome summers with great wildflower blooms and reduced wildfire risk so bring on the snow! I remember a few years ago in early May we got a 3 foot random storm…fingers crossed for some fun surprises like that!
